From website:

What experiences, places, and sounds contribute to your sonic sense of place?

This map highlights the multi-sensory nature of how we experience the city. It explores how music animates our lives and connects us to specific sites. It makes visible a range of sites where we experience music—formal and informal, “permanent” and ephemeral, extant and historical.

In the interactive map below, you can:

  • Collaborate on mapping the diverse geography of D.C. music.

  • Upload images and audio recordings that represent how music matters to your D.C. experiences. You can also explore the memories and examples that others have pinned to the map. These are marked with a red star symbol.

  • Discover archival recordings of D.C. artists who have participated in the Smithsonian Folklife Festival. These are marked on the map with a yellow sun symbol. Did you know that the Ralph Rinzler Folklife Archives has been recording performances since the first Festival in 1967? It contains thousands of recordings and photographs documenting D.C. artists and communities.
